- Soon after the death of William Henderson in 1923, Indian expanded its product line with the purchase of the assets of the Ace Motorcycle Company
- By 1938, the Indian Four returned to the original valve configuration and won back some of the support lost by the upside down model (1936 and 1937)
- Many consider this model the Classic Indian which still effects the Indian designs of today's models
- This 1940 Indian Four was the first equipped with the Harley style seat post suspension, a center stand, a two inches longer raked front fork, and the new rear plunger suspension which had two inches of suspension travel in both directions for a smoother ride
