The XA was a flat twin, shaft drive motorcycle made specifically at the request of the US Army
The Army specifically wanted a shaft drive for durability and several other features that made the BMW R71 (1938 thru 41) so reliable, such as the boxer engine which reduced oil temperature
It is believed that only 1,016 XA's were produced
XA's were no longer needed by the time production began. The Army had decided that the Jeep would be the generalpurpose vehicle of choice
