1918 Excelsior Big-Valve Race Bike
  • The Excelsior Motorcycle Company (later Excelsior Henderson) built racing motorcycles in Chicago from 1905 until 1931
  • The riders chased around steeply banked ovals made from wood planks often at speeds of 100 mph
  • These bigvalve racers had the same top speeds as their competitors, but the straight forward big valve design allowed for increased reliability, a competitive advantage for long distance races
  • This twin has a 61ci engine (1000cc) with exhaust valves larger than a Mack truck of the era
