  • Felix Wankel designed the Rotary Engine in the late 1920s
  • Many companies, including NSU, Citroen, Mazda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Fichtel & Sachs purchased licenses to develop and manufacture the Rotary engine
  • Fichtel & Sachs purchased the German Hercules motorcycle company in 1963 and eventually mated the Wankel engine to the Hercules motorcycle
  • The Hercules W2000 Wankel Rotary was prototyped in 1970 and began its total production run of 1,784 motorcycles in 1974
  • This smooth running single rotor engine has a compression ratio of 8.5:1, producing between 27 and 32 hp at 6,500 rpm
