1989 Norton Commander "P53"
  • Behind this bodywork is a 588cc liquid cooled, twin rotor Wankel rotary engine that powers this Norton to 125 mph
  • The Wankel was invented by German engineer Felix Wankel in 1929 offering simplicity and smoothness thanks to its lack of reciprocating parts, high power to weight ratio, and its compact size
  • Around 1973 Norton acquired the production tooling for the Wankel engine from Hercules after they ceased production of the W2000 rotary engine motorcycle
  • Norton then focused on the P41, a police spec motorcycle that was introduced in the early 1980s as the Interpol 2, which evolved into a water cooled version P52 Interpol and finally the P53 Commander luxury touring bike
  • Fewer than 300 Commanders were built, and this is the only one known in the U.S. in this as new Norton Motors Ltd. reconditioned state
