Turbo Seca 650
- The Yamaha Turbo Seca 650 is one of the "turbo wars" bikes of the early 1980's
- These turbos displayed a two-stage personality, one below 5,000 rpm and one above where fun was delivered
- The goal was sort of a best-of-both-worlds motorcycle, a bike with the economy and lively personality of a carbureted 650 Four for "normal" riding, but with the potential to match the performance of almost any machine on the road when the boost was dialed up
- The turbocharger is a Mitsubishi TC03-06A unit and is claimed by Yamaha to be the world's smallest with a turbine diameter of only 39mm safely spinning up to 210,000 rpm
- Yamaha engineers eliminated the dreaded "turbo lag" by installing a set of reed valves between the surge tank and the air cleaner that eliminated temporary intake depressions allowing normal air flow to make up for intake pressure deficits - genius
