Description

In the 1980s, Safir Engineering of Surrey, England partnered with JW Automotive and Ford to create a limited run of GT40s that honored the legendary race cars while carrying the name by legal right. These Mk V cars were not replicas. They were true continuation GT40s, built using original specifications and tooling where possible, with updated chassis refinements and modern touches for durability. Each car was a bespoke build for enthusiasts who wanted to experience the performance, style, and history of Ford's four-time Le Mans-winning machine.

Chassis GT40P/1134 was delivered in March 1991 and has remained a rare and highly documented example of the series. It received a comprehensive refurbishment that included a repaint in its striking original yellow with black stripes and a complete rebuild of its 5.3-liter Ford V8. Performance enhancements include Gurney Weslake cylinder heads, four Weber carburetors, and a custom turkey-pan cold-air box, all mated to a ZF five-speed manual transaxle with a Safir twin-plate clutch. This combination ensures that the car drives and sounds like a true race-bred GT40 while remaining reliable enough for road or track enjoyment.

The car retains all of the period-correct features that make the Mk V so desirable. BRM-style magnesium wheels are wrapped in period-inspired tires, AP Racing ventilated disc brakes provide strong stopping power, and adjustable coilovers allow precise handling. Dual custom fuel cells, a Halon fire-suppression system, and the cable-operated shifter add both safety and authenticity. The right-hand-drive cockpit is outfitted with black bucket seats featuring ventilation grommets, classic Smiths gauges, and a Moto-Lita steering wheel. Every detail reflects careful craftsmanship and the racing DNA of the original GT40.

Extensive documentation accompanies this car, including invoices and photographs from its mechanical and cosmetic restorations, providing a full record of its care and history. GT40P/1134 is more than a continuation car. It is a chance to own a piece of motorsport history, one of the few cars legally allowed to carry the GT40 name, and an opportunity to experience the sound, speed, and presence of one of the most iconic race cars ever built.
