Description

There's quirky, and then there's the Volkswagen Thing. Originally developed for military use as the Type 181, the Thing embodies a level of charm and character that no modern vehicle dares to replicate. Its unapologetically boxy shape, flat panels, removable doors, and fold-down windshield make it one of the most distinctive and playful vehicles ever sold to the public. It's part beach cruiser, part off-roader, and all personality.

This 1974 example has been taken to the next level with a full body-off restoration, blending originality with thoughtful upgrades that make it as fun to drive as it is to look at. Under the rear deck lid is a professionally built 2110cc air-cooled engine featuring an 82mm forged stroker crank, 90.5mm pistons and cylinders, an Engle 120 cam, and 041 heads with 40mm intake and 35mm exhaust valves. It's also equipped with a solid shaft rocker assembly, heavy-duty oil pump, full-flow oil system, and a lightweight 8-dowel flywheel, bringing output to an estimated 110 horsepower, over double the original spec.

Dual Weber carbs deliver the fuel with classic air-cooled flair, while a rebuilt transaxle keeps everything shifting smoothly. The ride is supported by 15-inch wheels and improved stopping power comes from upgraded front disc brakes. Custom bumpers, a roll bar, and a raised stance give it a subtle off-road attitude that fits its go-anywhere roots.

Owning a VW Thing isn't about blending in. It's about embracing fun, simplicity, and style that refuses to take itself too seriously. Whether it's carving down the beach, cruising through town, or stealing the spotlight at a cars and coffee event, this restored and reimagined Thing brings smiles with every mile.
